EXTRACT FROM THE ARTIST'S JOURNAL: "The Gate way is called Saracenic: it is of the rudest form: one immense stone forming the covering, & about three others the sides: it is situated between the second & third range of walls, & is a most curious antiquity still in high preservation - The view immediately below, consists of a ravine, along the bottom runs a small stream, whose course is followed by the new road to Almontone, lying in the immense plain, which divides these Mountains from the Sabine range: of which, on paper, under the gate was a kind of green terrace, formed by the Mountains, this view is nearly as inexhaustible to the eye as impossible to be detailed in adequate terms -" 10th April. -
