Heriot lead as remarkable a life as any amateur painter of the late-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Scottish born, he travelled to the West Indies in the 1770s (where he made many drawings) before being taught by Sandby at the Woolwich Academy. In 1792 he was posted to Quebec, eventually being appointed Deputy Postmaster General for British North America by Pitt in 1799. He made many watercolours in Canada, and is consequently a significant figure in the history of art there.
