“Remounting our mules we journeyed onwards and came to infinitely the finest part of our road, under a town called La Fortza placed on the ridge of a high hill. We wound over a rocky point, Cape St. Allessio, boldly confronting the steady waves, on which stands around town, and a fortress built by the English when guarding Sicily from the French, called, I think, La Scala. These passes were infinitely beautiful and romantic.”
