“I wandered about in search of a view of Augosta, situated upon the coast, and guarded on one side by a projecting peninsula, jutting into the sea. A lighthouse seems built upon a solitary rock some way in the sea; the guides said it was a prison. The town, tho’ not large, looked tolerably handsome. I walked above a mile to find the view, thro’ rich fields of corn, and groves of carob and olive trees, the contrast of whose verdure, the deep green of the Carob and the pale bluer shade of the olive, were relieved by the bright pink flower of the Oleander and the deep yellow blossoms of the prickly pear, now in full beauty.”
