Dylan Jonas Stone is a multi-disciplinary artist known as much for his sculptures, miniature constructions, photography and puppetry as he is for his painting.
While studying at EINA (Barcelona) and at SVA (New York) he worked painting plants and flowers in the herbariums of The Botanical Gardens in Barcelona and The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in New York. This sparked his love of working on a small scale and in great detail. Some of his botanical works are now at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University. His documentary work ‘Drugstore Photographs, or, a trip along the Yangtze River’ (1999) was acquired by The New York Public Library. This archive of photographs recording lower Manhattan, block-by-block, were an early example of him using methodical systems in his work; an essential approach when painting in miniature.
Dylan Jonas Stone’s enormous 12’x14′ watercolour of his parents’ bookshelves, painted in painstaking detail as if a miniature, was purchased by The Museum of Fine Arts Houston. You can see this and the rest of Dylan’s impressive work on his website – dylanjonasstone.com.
In the Victoria & Albert Museum there is a room with the history of British miniature portrait painting … As I walked around the room it was clear to see how this form of portraiture had developed and how miniatures became prized objects of great beauty. I was curious to try and understand how to work with a magnifying glass and achieve the detail needed to paint these intimate portraits…

These six portraits were made in Namsos, a port town in the Nord Trondelag region in the middle of Norway. During WWII the Germans wanted this area of fjords for both its resources and strategic location. They took the British and French by surprise, killing thousands of Allied Navy personnel. The Namsos Museum – Kultar Huset i Namsos – commissioned Dylan Jonas Stone to make portraits of residents of the town; those who are directly related to the original military campaign, as well as residents who had been more generally affected by the trauma of war. The exhibition, having been delayed by Covid, is scheduled for 2023.
