Calvert spent much of his working life in Manchester, where he was a founding member of The Royal Manchester Institution. He was apprenticed to the cotton trade but gave this up in favour of painting in 1810. Calvert ran a Manchester drawing school called The Academy. He was principally a painter of landscapes, so it possible this sensitive portrait is of a close friend or family member.
