The December Selected Group 2009 - KENNETH ROWNTREE (1915-1997)Kenneth Rowntree (1915-1997)
Trained at the Ruskin Drawing School and The Slade, Kenneth Rowntree was a painter, illustrator (A Prospect of Wales, for King Penguin), designer (see his designs for book jackets below) and muralist (his work for the Lion and Unicorn Pavilion at Festival of Britain and the Barclay School are notable examples). During the war he was employed by Lord Clarke on the Recording Britain project, and was associated with the group of artists including Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious that formed around the village of Great Bardfield in Essex. He taught mural painting at the Royal College of art throughout the 1950s and was Professor of Fine Art at Newcastle University from 1960 – 1980.
All works comes from the artist’s estate.
