MAY SELECTED GROUP 2009 - Edna Clarke-Hall

Selected Group for May will be: ‘Self – Studies’ by EDNA CLARKE HALL (1879-1979) Painting without a life model in the then remote isolation of Great House at Upminster, Edna Clarke Hall chose to study herself  both for practice and, in the case of her ‘Wuthering Heights’ drawings, for inspiration. There is a strong feeling thoughout her work that everything springs very directly from her and her experiences. That these studies are often faceless is telling; unsure and possibly suspicious of the effect of her facial beauty, she preferred to study herself for expressive posture and composition. These all came from the Collection of her son, Denis Clarke Hall.
